A robo-runner has made history after breaking the world record for the fastest 100-metre sprint by a bipedal robot at 24.73 seconds.
Although it doesn’t come close to the 9.58-second record achieved by Usain Bolt in 2009, it is a first in the robotics world and has established a Guinness World Record.
The ‘blind’ robot, named Cassie, operates with no cameras or external sensors, and was trained the equivalent of one year in the span of just one week thanks to a computing technique that allows the robot to go through a range of training experiences simultaneously.
Inspired by ostriches, Cassie was built with knees that bend like those of the speedy bird, enabling the robot to start and finish the sprint in a standing position and without falling.
