It's hard to overstate the horror of the elephant massacre at Dzanga Bai a few years ago. For decades it had been a refuge – home to joyful reunions where elephants would scamper across the clearing to greet a family member they hadn't seen in a while.
WCS’s Andrea Turkalo, one of the world’s foremost experts on forest elephants, has studied the elephants at Dzanga Bai for almost 25 years. After the massacre, Turkalo was forced to flee the site. She returned after more than a year away and since then, has been observing the animals trying to piece together which animals were killed and which ones survived. This video tells the story of her return.
