To be successful, China’s new Belt and Road initiative needs to have synergies with the country’s developing, traditional land and maritime silk roads – but also through trade with developed countries. That is where Hong Kong comes in, says HKTDC’s Director of Research Nicholas Kwan in this second of a two-part series. Hong Kong has a high concentration of multinationals to play a unique, pivotal role indirectly linking the Belt and Road with Europe, the United States, Japan and other countries and regions.
