This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Megan and Dawn talk about dance and how dance movement can open new and enhanced learning possibilities for children.
Megan Knotts grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and attended The Dance Centre in Skippack, PA for 13 years studying various styles of dance and student teaching. She is currently a senior dance major attending Drexel University. As an accelerated BS/MS degree program student, Megan is also working towards a Master of Science in teaching, learning, and curriculum concentrating on elementary education. With a passion for dance education and educational research, Megan hopes to continue her studies and pursue a PhD in an education-related field. Megan performs with the Drexel Dance Ensemble and Drexel Youth Touring Ensemble, in addition to choreographing on the ensemble and participating in numerous dance outreach programs. While not performing or in class, Megan works for Dance/UP, a non-profit service organization for Philadelphia dance artists, and also works as a certified Pilates instructor at Drexel Pilates. Megan seeks to share her passion for dance with others and advocate for the possibilities and benefits of movement!
Dawn Mazzola grew up right outside of Philadelphia, and attended The Rock School West for Dance Education for 14 years, studying many styles of dance. She is currently a senior dance major at Drexel University, with a minor in psychology and participating in various outreach programs. She will be attending graduate school, also through Drexel, to pursue a Master's degree in the Creative Arts Therapies, concentrating in dance/movement therapy. Dawn is also currently a member of modern-dance company, SomaticMovers. She has performed in, as well as choreographed, for Drexel Dance concerts including a performance with Singapore's Annual Youth Arts Festival. She has also participated in the Philadelphia Live Arts/Fringe Festival for the past two years. When she's not on stage, Dawn works with University of Pennsylvania Recreation teaching dance, and indulges in her love of improvised dance anywhere she can!
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
