Education activist Gemma Sisia believes poverty shouldn't determine one's future. In 2002, she set out to build what is now one of the biggest nonprofit schools in Africa, with more than 1,800 students. Gemma shares her remarkable story and her hopes for the students at the School of St Jude.

Gemma Sisia grew up in northern New South Wales, the only girl in a family of seven boys. At age 22, Gemma became devoted to helping the poor in Africa and spent three years as a volunteer teacher in Uganda. This experience led to a fervent belief that a free, high-quality education should be the right of all children in the world and she was determined to fight poverty through education. In 2002, St Jude's opened with one teacher and three students. Today, it has expanded to include more than 1,800 students across three campuses and employs more than 400 local Tanzanian staff.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
