The Missouri Department of Conservation’s August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in St. Charles will be renovated, beginning in January 2015, into an expanded, state-of-the-art shooting range featuring more shooting stations and classroom facilities.
The project is part of Conservation’s ongoing commitment to help Missourians improve their outdoor skills and discover nature.
To facilitate the renovation, the existing shooting range will temporarily close for public use in January 2015 and remain closed approximately 24-30 months. The new range will be constructed on the same site.
To minimize the inconvenience to current users during the renovation, the Missouri Department of Conservation is expanding shooting opportunities at other MDC ranges in the St. Louis area, as well as working with other commercial ranges to provide additional shooting opportunities.
The August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center has had no major upgrades since its opening 40 years ago.
The new range will incorporate the most current national shooting range design standards. It will provide an increased number of shooting stations, classroom facilities, and improvements which will add user conveniences and reduce waiting times.
Design features of the new range include:
o 20 position 100-yard shooting range and a 15 position 50-yard range for rifle and pistol use, five trap/skeet overlay ranges with electronic controls, and two shotgun patterning ranges.
o Concrete floors, walls and overhead baffle structures will control and contain projectiles. A bullet trap on the far end will decelerate bullets and deposit them into sealed plastic buckets at the base of the trap for recycling.
o Handicap accessible booths.
o Improved lighting, sound-reduction guards, and public restrooms.
o Archery facilities that will include two static archery ranges.
o Dedicated education space at the shooting range with a 60-person classroom to host educational programs onsite.
