This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The life expectancy gap between best and worst off in the City of Glasgow is 28 years, and 25% of boys born there will not live beyond the age of 60. Thus, we need to rethink the Common Health of Glasgow together with its Common Wealth. Cam proposes moving beyond concentrating on individual risk factors, such as diet or exercise, and complementing these with community-based initiatives, which act on killers such as low income, societal exclusion and hopelessness. He describes how social business scan be a vehicle for that -- enterprises driven by a social mission, owned by communities and for communities -- and how this has led to major a research initiative across Scotland, involving six universities, the social enterprise community, jointly funded the UK's Medical Research Council and Economic & Social Research Council, aimed at evidencing his propositions.

Cam Donaldson holds the Yunus Chair in Social Business & Health at Glasgow Caledonian University, his post named in honour of 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate, Muhammad Yunus. Cam is a leading health economist who has also held chairs at the Universities of Newcastle, Calgary and Aberdeen and won £25m (£10m as lead investigator) in research funding during his 30-year career. He has published over 200 refereed journal articles in economics, medical, health policy and health management journals and co-authored several books; his latest offering being Credit Crunch Health Care (Policy Press; 2011). Since taking up his post in 2010, Cam's main focus has been in assessing impacts of microcredit and social business on health and wellbeing, mostly through a £1.96m programme grant funded jointly by the UK's Medical Research Council and Economic & Social Research Council.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
