This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What is design? What is art? How fast can a paper airplane possible fly? John is an expert in the study of interfaces – between art and science, design and history, culture and technology, teaching and learning – and will share with us his thoughts on these questions and how design can influence us to create, inspire, and grow.

John is an Associate Professor of Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. His passion is “whole brain education” – balancing the analytical left side with the creative imaginative right side to deal with the dynamic and uncertain reality we live in.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
