Historian Frank Dikötter said there's long been a focus on elite politics in modern Chinese history. In his trilogy on modern China, the author seeks to shed light on the lives of ordinary people under Mao Zedong's rule from 1949 to 1976. He searched for answers in Communist Party archives that were only made public about a decade ago. Verbatim archives also provided materials for Dikötter's award-winning book--- Mao's Great Famine.
