The Indian Army claims to have launched nine missile strikes against Pakistan and Pakistan-administered on May 6, in what has been described by the Pakistani military as an act of “unprovoked” aggression.
The attack follows weeks of escalating tensions between the two countries, prompted by an attack by Kashmiri resistance fighters in Pahalgam that killed more than 20 Indian nationals.
Lt Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the spokesman of Pakistan’s military, told local broadcaster Geo News that India had fired missiles on the cities of Bahawalpur, Muridke, Bagh, Muzaffarabad and Kotli. He confirmed at least three deaths and more than a dozen injuries, adding that Pakistani forces had begun retaliatory attacks against India.
According to an Indian Defense Ministry statement, Indian armed forces launched “Operation Sindoor” and targeted “terrorist infrastructure”.
“Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution,” the statement said.
US President Donald Trump described the latest flare-up between India and Pakistan as “a shame” and expressed hope that tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors end “very quickly.”
