- Since the outbreak of civil war in Syria, more than 2.5 million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries, with Lebanon and Jordan hosting most of the refugees. The countries have been under enormous stress because of the refugees -- rental costs are rising, water resources are dwindling, and classrooms are increasing more crowded.
World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim traveled the region for four days and called on the international community to provide more funding and assistance to Lebanon and Jordan to help both countries handle the additional demands on services. "We must step up our assistance," he said.
