Ruth and I spent 6 days in Jordan in 1993. We hadn't planned to go to Jordan, in fact we knew nothing at all about Jordan. In Cairo, we had met a nice family at the Muhammad Ali Mosque, and they invited us to visit them in Petra. Three weeks later we decided, why not? We took the 'ferry from hell' from the Sinai and it finally arrived in Aqaba at 1:00am (10 hours late, long story). The next day we arranged for a car and driver for 5 days. Wadi Rum was our first stop, the scenery there reminded me of Utah (with camels). Next stop was Petra where we stayed for two nights. Petra is one of the worlds most interesting destinations. Hidden away from the beaten path, you enter Petra through the narrow Sig (Canyon) 3 kn long. A village was unearthed here that dates back to 7000 BC. Petra covers a large area filled with temples and tombs cut into the cliffs. Of course the highlight is the Treasury featured in the movie 'Indiana Jones' but there are equally impressive features such as the Ad-Deir monastery. After Petra we stayed one night in Kerak at the foot of the crusader castle. In Kerak we had fun trying on different traditional Bedouin clothes.
Another surprise was the Mujib Valley, a canyon 1 km deep and 4 km wide, Jordan's Grand Canyon. From there we visited Madaba and then to Amman
Overall an unforgettable, wonderful trip.
