FIRST TIME FLIERS: Watch as these newly hatched monarchs fly for the first time after being raised from caterpillars found on milkweeds on MDC Habitat Chief Norman Murray’s property. Note the chrysalises (cocoons are moth pupae that are covered with silk) stuck on the paper towel that the monarchs have just emerged from! Monarch butterfly populations are in severe decline due to habitat loss. Monarchs need milkweed and nectar plants. After eggs hatch, larvae eat only milkweed plants – no other plant! Adults need ample supplies of nectar to fuel their spectacular migration. Monarchs migrate like birds do and some travel as far as 3,000 miles to winter grounds in Mexico. Consider planting milkweed and native wildflower species to help the monarchs – it’s an easy and productive way to help wildlife in your own backyard. For more information about milkweeds, visit or visit your local native plant nursery.
