On 1 February, the military seized control of Myanmar, toppling the elected government. Since then hundreds of civilians have been killed protesting against the coup. The country’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been put under house arrest.
Aung San Suu Kyi has already spent a total of 15 years under house arrest. A symbol of peaceful resistance, she was only released in 2010 after the military junta began to loosen its grip and a transition to democracy began. In November 2020 Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy won the parliamentary elections for a second time in a row - but in February 2021 the military clawed back power. Since then thousands and thousands of people have been taking to the streets to protest. The documentary shows just how popular the 75-year-old is in her home country and just how dangerous that makes her in the eyes of the military. For almost her entire political career Aung San Suu Kyi has challenged the military dictatorship and fought for democratization. But Suu Kyi became de facto leader with the support of the military and she learned to come to an accommodation with the mighty generals. In recent years, she has become a controversial figure internationally because she failed to condemn the military’s violence against the minority Rohingya Muslims.
