This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Our oceans play a pivotal role in regulating the climate of our planet. Unfortunately, our understanding of what happens below the surface is poor because we have not been able to monitor ocean properties at suitable time-scales. One exciting solution to this fundamental problem is to make continuous measurements from cabled undersea observatories available in real-time via the internet. This is a transformative idea offering the possibility of capturing events occurring on time-scales of seconds to years but also challenging our abilities to actually deal with the data.

Working as a staff scientist at Ocean Networks Canada, Akash supports interdisciplinary research in Plankton Dynamics and Biogeochemistry. He has a background in biological oceanography and is focused on how the base of marine food webs function in a changing environment. A major theme in this work has been the application of novel tools and techniques across a broad suite of environments ranging from local waters around Vancouver Island to the Canadian Arctic and the East China Sea.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
