The project will survey water and soil in the Northern region of Mt. Kenya to determine the prevalence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) as a result of the use of pesticides. The project will then conduct an education campaign among outgrowers of the large horticultural farms, targeting a 90% reduction in the use of POPs in the region. 240 pesticide stockists (i.e., distributors) will be trained to identify POPs-containing chemicals. Farmers will establish integrated pest management units in their farms and parasitoids and other farmer friendly insects will be introduced in adopted by 80% of the targeted farmers.
