Informed by empathy and a love for the places and people he works with, Stephen Goldsmith's work in our community can be seen in neighborhoods, parks, public policies, the creation of affordable housing, live/work space for artists and craftspeople, and incubator space for both for-profit and non-profit businesses. During his 20 years as the founding director of Artspace, he transformed underutilized historic buildings into mixed-use spaces that have been recognized both locally and nationally for their innovation, architectural excellence and as examples of social and environmental responsibility.
He is an Associate Professor with the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Utah. He also serves as the Director of the Center for the Living City, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to enhance our understanding of the complexity of contemporary urban life and through it, promote increased civic engagement. His work also includes award winning design collaborations such as the daylighting of (the real) City Creek, the Seven Canyons Fountain in Liberty Park, Headgates at the Salt Lake Community College, and an interactive, contemplative water feature at the entry to Primary Children's Medical Center.
Stephen is a fourth generation Salt Lake City resident who loves spending as many days and nights as possible in the magical wild places of Utah contemplating ways to quickly heal, repair, and transform the places we care about.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
