ROCKET NETTING: A Different Perspective - This rocket net was set off at Ten Mile Pond Conservation Area in Mississippi County to capture wood ducks for banding. MDC biologists gather each year on many wetland areas to net and band wood ducks with lightweight, numbered aluminum leg bands. The bands help scientists monitor population numbers and movements of birds if they’re harvested or recaptured afterward. The wood ducks are baited over a period of weeks so they congregate in one area. Cannon nets are then shot over them using explosives to capture them for banding and release. To report a banded bird this fall, visit www.reportband.gov . They only want to know the band number – you can keep the band!
