On the biggest day of the winter, Mavericks lived up to its ferocious reputation and gave the best big-wave surfers in the world a contest deserving of their mettle and might.

Where do we begin.

Today, during the fourth and probably most anticipated event of the Big Wave World Tour, the waves, a chilly 18-20ft+ (up to 50ft faces), were persistent and giving. Massive, heaving bowls, tippy-toe air drops, a few 2-wave hold-downs, Jet Skis and inflatable vests were a prevalent sight as well.

That -- and a South African named Twiggy, who pretty much owned the entire day.

While in the early rounds, guys like last year's champ Peter Mel and Ryan Augenstein put on a clinic, flexing that local knowledge, the semis also had their share of epic battles.

While Greg Long dueled with Shaun Dollar, Mark Healey dueled with a set on the head, a perspective caught on his GoPro cam attached to his board -- which you NEED to watch on the site's heat analyzer. Truly unbelievable.
But then the final rolled around and the man with a heart like a Nor-Cal redwood with a nickname called Twiggy, stole the show, catching twice as many waves as the other five guys in the heat, including a gut-wrenching perfect 10.

Ross Williams said it best of the man, "Twiggy doesn't just go for broke, he also shows control, riding every wave all the way into the channel. But he's usually deepest too, of course."

Indeed he was. So deep on most in fact, that Twiggy was airdropping on his toes, then catching a heel-side rail, but regaining to push around the guillotine. Bawse-drops.

Although 2nd place Shane Dorian surely gave Baker a run for his money, also air-dropping into a few impossibly steep and rowdy bowls, Twigs prevailed, a man utterly possessed the entire event.

Said the sponsorless Twiggy Baker, "The prize money's great, but the thing is, even if none of us had sponsors or there was no event: we'd still all be out here today. We just love it." Amen, you maniac, you.

The Finals results go as follows:

1. Grant "Twiggy" Baker — 29.33
2. Shane Dorian — 25.532
3. Ryan Augenstein— 16.663
4. Tyler Fox — 12.664
5. Greg Long — 12.000
6. Anthony Tashnick — 0.006
