Here is a glimpse at the making of a World Cup trophy replica commissioned for the winner of the 2026 tournament. It is one of many produced at a workshop in Milan, Italy, for the past 50 years.

Contrary to what one might assume, winners of the tournament only get to keep a gold-plated replica of the original World Cup trophy, worth approximately $20 million and preserved at the FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich, Switzerland.

The original trophy is presented to the winning team only for the duration of the final award ceremony. It is then shipped to the Italian workshop, where the name of the winning team is engraved on the the disc underneath, after which it is returned to the museum.
