In 270 AD the young Egyptian Anthony donated his goods to the poor and withdrew into the wilderness. His cell in the barren mountains of the Red Sea shores became the starting point of monasticism which his followers were to spread throughout the Christian World. Today, as ever, the example of St.Anthony inspires Egyptian monks to devote themselves to God and with-draw into the desert, the source of the great monotheistic world religions. "Here nothing speaks, but God alone..".
