Traditional dance in a digital era: Nancy Kane at TEDxCortland

Called a "leader and trendsetter" by Dance Teacher magazine, Dr. Nancy Kane is a strong advocate of dance and arts education. She has been dancing, teaching and choreographing since 1986, working professionally in the U.S. and Europe. She is a Past President of the National Dance Association and was the official NDA liaison to Callerlab. For the Lloyd Shaw Foundation, she has taught Irish dance and singing, and is currently their Vice President. She has received grants, awards, and accolades from the National Endowment for the Humanities, several arts councils, and the United University Professions (Fayez Samuel Award for Courageous Service). A New York State native, Nancy earned her M.A. in Dance at London's Laban Centre and her Ph.D. in Dance Education (with Dance Technology specialization) at NYU. She currently teaches dance and stage combat at SUNY Cortland's American Musical Theatre program, and is Director of the Dance Program at the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts. She has a second master's degree in Kinesiology (Exercise Science), and her research projects have helped students and professors understand the physical and psychological demands and benefits of dance and musical theatre performance.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
