About the Speaker:

Dr. Vaggelis Mallios has studied law at the University of Athens and at the University Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonee), with a concentration in criminal and public justice.

He has published a series of articles and researches, while today he teaches "Justice and Bioethics" for a postgraduate degree of the University of Crete.

He exercises counselling and active practice in Greek and European courts over a wide range of public justice sectors, with special emphasis on human rights, and has also participated in Legislative Committees.

In January 2013, he represented among others at the European Court for Human Rights, the exclusion of homosexual couples from the Greek Civil Union.

The victory was historical: the first conviction of the Court towards gay discrimination in our country. "The decision of the Court notes to Greece that when a state legislates, it is required to consider social progress and the fact that there is not one way only of forming one's personal and family life", he says on the matter.
