Got cabin fever?
The Missouri Department of Conservation encourages you to discover nature and get outdoors for a winter hike.
From the subtle sounds of snow falling in the woods, to the shapes of trees and hills, nature reveals surprising rewards during the winter months.
It’s fun to go to places that you have hiked before to see the differences in the seasons between summer and winter.
You are better able to spot wild animals.
Trees are easier to identify through bark and twigs.
It’s just a really rewarding experience.
Hiking in the winter is all about dressing in layers.
The base layer should fit snugly and be a good wool or synthetic blend.
Insulation is the next layer, a fleece or wool sweater.
The final layer, a shell, should be waterproof to keep you dry.
And don’t forget your hat, gloves and a good pair of waterproof hiking boots.
Bring a small day-pack with food, water and emergency supplies and you’re ready to get outdoors.
