Life froze in Istanbul at 9:05 local time ( 06:05 GMT), with people standing on the streets, traffic stopped and sirens were heard blaring to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the death of the Republic of Turkey's founding father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on Saturday.

Locals, some apparently caught in the middle of driving or walking were standing still, honouring Ataturk with two traditional minutes of silence that annually bring the whole country to a halt.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was born in the now-Greek city of Thessaloniki in 1881, when it was part of the Ottoman Empire. After World War I, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Ataturk led Turkey in its War of Independence against the European Allies. Following the war, the Republic of Turkey was established in 1923, with Ataturk as its president. He passed away at the age of 57 in Istanbul's Dolmabahce Palace on November 10, 1938.
