Two Aldabra giant tortoises are now grazing at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo. Both males, one weighs 400 pounds and the other tips the scales at 600 pounds. Besides their impressive size, Aldabra tortoises are thought to live 200 years or more. Watch them move and learn a couple facts from Bill Orrico, a Senior Wild Animal Keeper at the Bronx Zoo.
Aldabra tortoises are native the Aldabra atoll in the Republic of Seychelles and have been introduced to several other islands in the western Indian Ocean. A vulnerable species, estimates indicate there are approximately 100,000 Aldabras remaining in the wild. WCS works to save endangered turtles and tortoises around the world through breeding programs in NYC, head start programs abroad, and working with governments and communities to save species on the brink of extinction.
