The Missouri Black Bear Research Project is in its fifth year as Missouri Department of Conservation and partners continue to trap and radio collar black bears in the southern half of the state to track their movements.
In 2010, MDC contracted with Mississippi State University to set hair snares to identify bears and estimate the states bear population using DNA.
The second phase of the study is underway and measures survival and determines the number of cubs per tracked female.
These studies will inform how to best manage for black bears in the state into the future.
