SIESTA OR DIGESTING? – This black snake was found sitting on top of an empty bird nest. But was the nest empty before the snake arrived? The Western ratsnake (black rat snake) is an excellent climber and often climbs trees to raid bird nests for eggs and young. Often called the "black snake," this is one of our state's largest and most familiar snakes. They eat a variety of rodents, small rabbits, bats, bird eggs, small birds, and, on occasion, lizards.
