Inaugurating this year’s Conversations series, Chinese artist Cao Fei is in discussion with Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director, Serpentine Gallery, London. Cao Fei’s multi-media practice explores the
contemporary conditions in urban China, taking form in RMB City – a city the artist developed as the avatar ‘China Tracy’ in the online world of Second Life. Modeled as a composite Chinese city of the 21st Century, RMB City operates as an open platform that interrogates the boundaries between the virtual and the real, exploring, as the artist states, ‘fantasy realms that are highly self-contradictory, inter-permeative, pan- political, extremely entertaining and laden with irony and suspicion.’
