Dandelions: Rising Out Of County Cages: Patrisse Cullors at TEDxYouthBuildCharterSchool

Would it be radical to suggest that our society's current understanding of what qualifies as an authentic curriculum, assessment, school environment, or even student-identity are based upon thoroughly biased and unjust perceptions of value, learning, and selfhood? Patrisse Cullors of Dignity & Power Now takes this question to task in her talk "Dandelions: Rising Out of County Cages." For Patrisse, criminality and incarceration figure as tools of oppression which have gone grossly unchallenged, especially when considering the clanking underbelly of "failing" schools in impoverished communities where rates of homelessness, drug abuse, gang involvement, food desertification, and domestic violence are stultifying: the school-to-prison pipeline.

Patrisse Cullors is a native-born Angeleno and identifies as an artist, organizer, and freedom fighter. She is currently the founder and Executive Director of Dignity and Power Now, and is building a coalition to help fight for civilian oversight of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department and promote public awareness around issues in the upcoming election of a new County Sheriff.
