In his Talk, LA CAUSA YouthBuild Lead Teacher David Flores, Jr. calls for explicit recognition of the ways that the common perception of educators as "knowledge gatekeepers" and students as "empty vessels" makes the establishment of truly equitable and critical teacher-student relationships extremely difficult (if not impossible).

David Flores, Jr. is a third year teacher at YouthBuild Charter School of California (YCSC). In his first year of teaching, David was recognized as Teacher of the Year, 2011-2012. During the 2012-2013 academic year, YouthBuild USA (YBUSA) selected him to participate in their Teachers Fellows program. As a Teachers Fellow, David was 1 of 17 educators selected from across the nation to help improve the teaching and learning experiences of educators and students across the YBUSA network. David's commitment to and passion for youth has garnered him an invitation to speak at venues that include UCLA's Royce Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Staples Center.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
