Phua made his public solo debut at the age of 17 with the role of 'Cobweb' in the Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO)'s production of Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1997) and at 18 he topped a nationwide audition to sing the treble solo in Bernstein's Chichester Psalms (1998) with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO). Since then, Phua takes pride in embracing different musical styles, having sung with early music group Ab Oriente, the award-winning Singers Vocal Ensemble specialising in the music of living composers, the illustrious Philharmonic Chamber Choir (Singapore) and also pop a-cappella group Curious Attacks. He has also collaborated with many local ensembles including the Striings Quartet, Oxley Quartet, the Teng Ensemble as well as the Phiharmonic Orchestra (Singapore).

Phua is currently the choral director of the Singapore Lyric Opera Children's Choir as well as the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Choir and the Anglo-Chinese School (Barker) Choir. He is also a radio presenter with Singapore's classical music station, Symphony 92.4.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
