A wave of violent attacks has hit at least nine French prisons, after the government announced a new plan to isolate top drug traffickers.

Cars were torched and gunfire rang out, with a group linked to organised crime claiming responsibility. France’s justice minister says the acts were aimed to intimidate the state and disrupt the public order, but that the crackdown on the traffickers will continue.
