A #tarawih prayer has been held at the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque for the first time since it was converted into a museum in 1934.

Worshippers marked the start of the holy month of Ramadan at the historic landmark of worship as it regained mosque status in 2020.

The night before Muslims start fasting from dawn to dusk, worshippers flock to mosques for the first tarawih, a special Ramadan evening prayer.

For two years since the pandemic began, mosques have been closed to worship for tarawih prayers as part of Covid-19 preventive measures. This year there are no restrictions on open iftars and collective prayers.
