Michael Sturtz is known for revolutionizing hands-on learning. He is a lecturer in Stanford's Mechanical Engineering Design Group and the director of the d.school's ReDesigning Theater project. Sturtz started as a sculptor, fabricator and product designer, and holds a master of fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is the founder of The Crucible, the nation's largest nonprofit industrial arts education facility and a model for alternative learning. He also holds a motorcycle world land speed record using biodiesel. As director of ReDesigning Theater, Sturtz applies design thinking to disrupt traditional ideas of theater and explore the integration of new technologies into live performance engagement.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
