Joanne Minaker is a sociologist and mother of three. Joanne's interests focus on care, human connection, and social in/justice. Her work identifies the processes through which marginalized women and criminalized youth are excluded, silenced, and dehumanized in mainstream society (e.g., the blame and shame narrative that stigmatizes young mothers). She digs into topics like parenting, youth violence, and community. Joanne teaches and researches at MacEwan University and earned her PhD in Socio-Legal Studies from Queen's University in 2003.
Joanne's talk: "Just Care"
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
