Pope Francis has made a historic apology to the Indigenous peoples of Canada for the centuries of abuses committed at the country's Catholic run residential schools. In the 19th and 20th centuries, thousands of indigenous children were forced to enrol in residential schools as a part of the government's forced assimilation programme. They spent years isolated from their families, language and culture, and many were physically and sexually abused by staff. Thousands died. Yasmine El-Sabawi reports.
