This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. When the AlHomaizi sisters told their friends and family in Kuwait that they wanted to become psychologists, "At least you'll be called doctors," was the nicest comment they heard. In this talk the AlHomaizis share their plan for raising awareness regarding mental health in their home country of Kuwait and beyond.
As aspiring psychologists from Kuwait, Dalal & Alaa AlHomaizi have first-hand knowledge of the stigma associated with mental illness in the Middle East and are committed to ending the "Psylence" (silence regarding psychological issues) in their home country of Kuwait. The AlHomaizi sisters have founded the SPEAK campaign (Standing for Psychological Education and Awareness in Kuwait), and in 2012 collaborated with the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health during World Mental Health Day to organize a conference for the purpose of raising awareness regarding mental health issues in Kuwait. The AlHomaizis began their work in global mental health as research assistants in the division of Global Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and are currently active within Helen Verdeli's Global Mental Health Lab at Teachers College, Columbia University.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
