The local NGO Grupo de Acción Social y Ambientalista -- Río Negro, in Paso de los Toros (Tacuarembó) has created the first Native Freshwater Species Aquarium- Reserve in Uruguay. The species are from the hydroelectric reservoir of Rincón de Baygorria (in the Negro river). This lake is threaten by different factors as the existence of non native species, toxic waterweeds, etc.
The group has worked with the Uruguayan Scout Group and the Fishermen local Group to do a collection of native species samples. Through this activity and some training initiatives, they have reached to attract the interest of the population in preserving biodiversity; and they have organised the training of local fishermen in sustainable fishing.
Furthermore, they have obtained the reproduction of some fishes, and it has made possible the maintenance and increase of the animals in the reserve, and the restocking in the river.
