Spain’s parliament has elected a new socialist speaker after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's party cut a last-minute deal with Catalan separatist parties to secure the position.

This gives Sanchez a chance to form a new coalition government and makes another election less likely. Simon McGregor-Wood has more.
