The Missouri Department of Conservation wants to help you to discover nature and learn more about walleye.
This popular game fish is one of the first fish to spawn in the spring, typically when water temperature exceeds 46 degrees.
Walleye naturally reproduce in the state’s lakes and rivers, but often not to a level that supports the current fishing pressure.
To help walleye numbers, the Conservation department collects adults each year to artificially produce and raise at their Lost Valley hatchery near Warsaw.
These fish are then stocked as one to two inch fingerlings.
Walleye fishing continues to grow in popularity in Missouri.
Some of the best walleye rivers include the Black, Current, Saint Francis and Mississippi rivers.
Lakes with good walleye populations include Lake of the Ozarks, Stockton, Bull Shoals, Table Rock and Smithville lakes.
Winter and early spring are some of the best times to go fishing for walleye.
