In the fourth episode of ‘To Do List in Istanbul’ we watched a whirling dervishes ceremony in Galata Mevlevi Lodge, located on Istiklal Avenue.
The 700-year-old sema ceremony embraces a variety of mystical metaphors itself. The ritual is bridges two worlds. As they spin, the dervishes' right hands are symbolically turned upward toward God, while their left hands are turned downward to Earth.
In 2005, the United Nations' cultural body, UNESCO, proclaimed the dervishes' ritual a masterpiece of "the oral and intangible heritage of humanity."
Galata Mevlevi Lodge also contains a museum displaying Turkish calligraphic arts, music and many items belonging to the Mevlevi culture.
