Director of the Geneva teaching hospitals Infection Control Program and the WHO Collaborating Center on Patient Safety, Didier Pittet was instrumental in introducing alcohol hand rubs as a replacement for soap and water in hospitals. Since 2005, the technique has been actively promoted by the WHO and to date over 130 of the194 Un member states had pledged their commitment to reducing hospital infection that kills on average one person every three minutes.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
