How do the sons and daughters of a dictator’s henchmen deal with the crimes of their fathers? In Argentina, the children of brutal torturers and murderers are speaking out about their parents’ atrocities.
During Argentina’s military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983, some 30,000 political dissidents were murdered. Decades later, the trauma of that period still reverberates through Argentinian society. Recently, a growing number of the sons and daughters of the military junta’s torturers and murderers have decided to break the silence in their families and take to the streets. Analía Kalinec is one of them. "I can’t love him, it’s too painful,” she says, speaking of her father.
She was an adult by the time she discovered that he had abducted, tortured, and killed hundreds of people on behalf of the military junta. In 2010, the former police commissioner was given a life sentence for crimes against humanity.
Analía Kalinec has since joined up with the sons and daughters of others who committed heinous crimes under the dictatorship. They’re working to shed more light on their fathers’ atrocities and ensure their sentences are not reduced. The group call their movement "Historias desobedientes”, or Disobedient Stories. Reporter Julieta Rudich met Analía Kalinec and her fellow campaigners in Buenos Aires. She reports on a unique initiative aimed at coming to terms with a devastating legacy.
