“Airspace around the world is becoming more congested and increasingly difficult to manage.”
Aviation expert Luke Fox tells TRT World why the frequency of airplane crashes is rising, especially in North America.

Fox, founder of WhiteFox Defense Technologies, a drone airspace security firm, says airspace congestion is increasing with the arrival of flying cars and drones, while aviation staff is being drastically cut.

In recent days, the Trump administration has faced widespread criticism for laying off 400 employees at the Federal Aviation Administration and for blaming DEI policies for the recent plane crash in Washington, DC.

Since the beginning of the year, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports at least 88 civil aviation accidents in the US, 13 of which were fatal for passengers.

Four major crashes in quick succession in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Alaska and Arizona have resulted in 87 fatalities.
Despite this, air travel remains the safest mode of transportation, according to a 2024 report by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in March found that passengers have on average a 1 in 13.7 million chance of dying in a plane crash.
