This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Stephanie Decker discusses how she overcame what seemed to be an insurmountable obstacle when parts of both of her legs were amputated after a category 4 tornado hit her hometown. With the help of her friends and family, Stephanie has been able to turn this obstacle into a new beginning. She shows us that though storms in life are inevitable, letting them defeat you is optional.

In March 2012, a tornado ripped through Henryville, Indiana. Stephanie, a 37-year-old mother, found herself in a life-altering moment. As her house began to disintegrate around her, she shielded her two young children with her body. Her dream home collapsed, crushing her legs, but because of her heroic actions, Stephanie's children were unscathed. Pulled from the rubble and rushed to the hospital, Stephanie learned that parts of both legs would need to be amputated. Refusing to be beaten by this setback, Stephanie has turned adversity into triumph.
