Do something that matters: Dr. Dave Jenkins at TEDxManly

Doctor, surfer, teacher, and expert on optimal health and anti-ageing, Dr Dave Jenkins has achieved much in his time. Yet he is probably best known as the founder of SurfAid, the international aid organisation that brings crucial community development and emergency response and preparedness assistance to underprivileged and isolated communities off the west coast of Sumatera, Indonesia.

Dr Dave conceived the idea of SurfAid in 1999 when, during a surfing holiday in the Mentawai Islands of Sumatera, he discovered communities with extreme but preventable childhood mortality and morbidity. He left his job, sold his house to help fund SurfAid and set about establishing a NGO. SurfAid has grown from Dave's vision to employing over 70 staff, 90% working in the field, established fundraising entities in 4 countries, and now works in five locations in Indonesia.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
