Las Macanas wetland area of Panama is one of the most extensive on the Pacific Coast of the Azuero Peninsula. It is also an Important Bird Area (IBA) that has obtained the first official recognition by Municipal Authorities through this Community Based Tourism project of « La Matita Aislada ». This group has received training by the Audubon Society of Panama to reinforce their knowledge of bird species and their habitat, SGP has equipped them with resources to receive tourists and is generating new means of income for community members. They are raising awareness of the importance and diversity of these ecosystems through annual fairs, educational activities and as part of a network of Community Based Organization (CBOs) projects in Wetland areas of Panama.
