Recycling of nutrients and waste is a means of obtaining synergy in land eroded by unsustainable production methods that require better land management systems such as those developed by the Farmers Association of Platanilla near Darien in Panama. These methods use animal waste as a source of fertilization for crops in eroded marginal lands. The nonconventional way of feeding pigs with abundant sources in the tropics such as sugarcane, fruits, tubers and shrubs reduces the need to buy external sources of animal feed. By harvesting water and reducing the negative impact of natural resources use in agriculture they are generating new sources of income and turning animal waste into inputs for land bioremediation. The Orchards provide extra food for human consumption and also byproducts along with other sources of food for animals like pigs and chickens that increase local farmer's income and combat malnutrition.
