Mexico City is sinking up to 40 centimeters a year in some areas, according to experts. ???? Here are some of the reasons why:
1. This megacity was built on top of a former lake. The soil has become more and more compacted over time.
2. The city’s main water supply is underground – and it’s being overused.
3. Mexico City’s located in one of the world’s most active earthquakes zones. As the water supply dries up, the ground becomes less stable.
More than 22 million people live in Mexico City, and the aging water infrastructure just can’t keep up. To compensate, water is brought in from other states. That may offer some relief to the city, but it ultimately ends up leaving those other areas dry.
